COM.POST #10: Paul Granjon (fr)

Granjon is interested in the co-evolution of man and machine. He works with electronica, robots, video and programmed software with which he creates a series of robots, installations, videos and live performances. He manages to exploit a series of complex technical actions and animate everyday gadgets to playful and humorous effect. His creations are commentaries on the effects of the ever-increasing technical complexity of our surroundings. Granjon is a teacher at the Time Based Practice Department of the School of Fine-Art in Cardiff.

For the COM.POST project, Paul Granjon has chosen to work in the African Market, creating in the space of a day a live composition fully based on the resources of the market. He focuses on the reuse of the ingredients one finds in the African Market and the chief principles upon which the market functions.

- September 26: Granjon and his team of co-performers will spend the day gathering the necessary orchestral items in the market to create a ‘big band,’ which will then compose a piece that will be performed later that day. The instruments that they produce and the recordings of the performance will then be made available in the market as part of a full 1-day cycle.

- September 27: Granjon will present a program that includes a reading and performances that feature a central role for his various robots. He will also be referring back to his ‘analog’ activities from the previous day in a presentation of his view of mankind, automation and the possibilities that the current situation offers. Some of the instruments used in the market action will be demonstrated. This will be done with the aid of various contemporary technologies as well as their strategic exclusion from the performance. Paul will also perform older songs with machines transported in his suitcase, including Mofo the humanoid robot in action for the first time in Holland!!
